Its often quite handy to convert cds or dvds into iso files so you can make use of them on devices that don’t have a cdrom/dvdrom.

dd if=/dev/dvd of=dvd.iso # for dvd
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=cd.iso # for cdrom
dd if=/dev/scd0 of=cd.iso # if cdrom is scsi

Even though you think your text went to the person you meant to send it to, it might have gone to a random person in your address book! Pretty serious flaw if you ask me.

I keep forgetting that the argument, resize, doesn’t do what I think it does, and how to actually resize an image.
So to resize all the files (I’m assuming that you only have images in your folder):
mogrify -scale 50% *

HowTo Backup and Move Wordpress

Just thought I’d share how I managed to move my wordpress blog from one server to another.

First you need to export your wordpress database:

mysqldump --add-drop-table -h localhost -u root -p wordpressdb | bzip2 -c > wordpressdb.bak.sql.bz2
Then you copy over the wordpress root folder plus the wordpressdb.bak.sql.bz2 to the new server.

And then you need to import the wordpress database into the new server:

bzip2 -d wordpressdb.bak.sql.bz2
mysql -h localhost -u root -p wordpressdb < wordpressdb.bak.sql

if it complains here, about the wordpressdb not existing,

start mysql (mysql -p)

then type:

create database wordpressdb;

After all this, you need to update your database settings in the wp-config.php file in the root of your wordpress blog folder.

(You only need to do this if you have a different sql root password or a different name for the database used for your blog).

Finally, when trying to login to the admin section of your site (www.whatever…com/mywordpressblog/wp-admin), and it

fails, you can try to add some defines at the top of the wp-config.php file:


define('WP_HOME','http://www.whatever...com/mywordpressblog');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://www.whatever...com/mywordpressblog');

Done.
